Here's a number that makes clients uncomfortable: 80% of a software product's total cost is maintenance, not building. That's not a scare tactic — it's an industry-wide reality backed by decades of data. And yet, most teams plan meticulously for launch and barely think about what comes after.

We've watched this play out firsthand. A client launches, celebrates, and then three weeks later asks: "Wait, who's monitoring this? What happens when something breaks at 2 AM? How do we decide what to build next?"

Building V1 is the easy part. Not easy in an absolute sense — shipping software is always hard. But it's the predictable part. You have a scope, a timeline, a team, and a finish line.

  2. Requirements evolve. The market moves, users request features, competitors ship something new.
  3. Dependencies rot. Libraries update, APIs deprecate, security vulnerabilities surface.
  4. Infrastructure needs attention. Traffic patterns change, databases grow, performance degrades gradually.
  5. The team's knowledge decays. If the people who built it walk away, the next team pays a massive context-switching tax.

What We Set Up Before Launch

Deployment Pipeline

Our CI/CD pipeline doesn't stop being important after launch — it becomes more important. Every post-launch change goes through:

  1. Automated type checking and linting. TypeScript catches entire categories of bugs before they hit production.
  2. Preview deployments. Every pull request gets a live preview URL on Vercel. We review changes in a real environment, not just in code review.
  3. Automated rollback. If a deployment causes errors, we can roll back to the previous version in under a minute.

Week 1-2: Stabilization

With Footy Access, we discovered post-launch that mobile users were hitting a layout issue on a specific Android viewport size that our testing hadn't covered. We caught it through error monitoring on day two and shipped a fix the same afternoon. That's what stabilization looks like — fast, focused, reactive.

Week 3-4: First Feedback Cycle

Once the platform is stable, we start collecting structured user feedback. What's working? What's confusing? What's missing? This feeds directly into the next iteration cycle.

Monthly: Feature Prioritization

After the initial stabilization, we move into monthly iteration cycles. Not every project needs this cadence — some are quarterly, some are ad-hoc — but the framework is the same.

When clients come to us with a list of 20 features they want next, we don't just build them in order. We score them:

  1. Impact. How many users does this affect? How much does it move a key metric?
  2. Confidence. How sure are we that this will work? Is there user data supporting the need, or is it a guess?
  3. Effort. How long will it take? What's the complexity?

Each factor gets a 1-10 score. Multiply them together, sort by total, and the priority list writes itself. This removes emotion from the conversation and gives clients a clear, defensible roadmap.

For BookIt Sports, this framework helped us prioritize a real-time score update notification system over a more "exciting" social features module. The notification system scored higher on impact (every active user benefits) and confidence (users were explicitly asking for it). The social features are still on the roadmap — they'll happen when the data supports them.

Technical Debt Management

Every codebase accumulates technical debt. The question isn't whether you have it — it's whether you're managing it intentionally.

Our approach:

  1. Track it explicitly. Technical debt items go in the backlog alongside feature requests. They're not invisible.
  2. Allocate time proactively. We dedicate roughly 20% of each iteration cycle to debt reduction. Dependency updates, refactoring, performance improvements.
  3. Prevent the big rewrites. Continuous small investments in code quality prevent the catastrophic "we need to rewrite everything" moment that kills products.

The worst outcome in software isn't bugs or slow features — it's the day someone says "we can't change this anymore." That's what unmanaged technical debt leads to.

What Ongoing Support Looks Like at Aetheris

We keep the monitoring infrastructure running, respond to critical alerts, and handle emergency fixes. The client drives feature development, either with their own team or on a project basis. This works well for stable products that aren't iterating rapidly.

Retainer Support

A set number of hours per month for bug fixes, small features, dependency updates, and technical debt management. This is our most common arrangement. It gives clients predictable costs and guaranteed availability without committing to a full development cycle.

Active Development

Ongoing feature development in sprint cycles. This is for products that are actively growing — new features, new integrations, scaling infrastructure. BookIt Sports and Edge Athlete OS both operate in this mode because they're in active growth phases.

The Real Cost of Skipping Post-Launch

We've inherited projects from agencies that shipped and disappeared. The pattern is always the same:

  1. Months of unmonitored errors. Users hit bugs, nobody knows, users leave.
  2. Outdated dependencies. Security vulnerabilities accumulate. The longer you wait, the harder the updates become.
  3. Lost context. The original team is gone. The new team spends weeks just understanding what was built and why.
  4. Emergency rewrites. What could have been prevented with steady maintenance becomes a six-figure rewrite.

One client came to us with a platform that had been "launched and left" for eight months.
